An insider's guide

Why charter a boat?

Visit unforgettable destinations only accessible by sea. When you charter a boat, you have all the benefits of owning a boat without owning one. A sailing holiday allows you to discover different locations every day in comfort and privacy with the favourite people in your life. Go where you want anytime and wake up in a new location every morning- it may be a secluded bay with turquoise waters one day and in front of an historic old town the next.

Long after your sailing holiday is over, you will look back at when you were your happiest and remember the people and the feeling.  Awaken your senses- the smells and tastes, the sun and sun and the vibrant culture and colours. So, pack your bags and get ready to make lasting moments.

Why sail in Croatia?

Croatia is one of the world’s most desirable sailing destinations with 6,000 km of coastline and thousands of coves. Over 1,244 islands offer protection from the open seas and countless bays to explore with picturesque coastal towns and mountain ranges as a backdrop. Great climate, mild seas, protected bays with modern infrastructure and marinas. Towns and villages are easily accessible for sightseeing and provisions.

Croatia has a diverse landscape, the purest sea in Europe and some of the beaches are the best in the world.

3 National Parks are islands- Brijuni in Istra, Kornati near Zadar and Mljet near Dubrovnik.

The mountains meet the turquoise sea with mild a Mediterranean climate.

Apart from natural beauty, Croatia is known for its historical and cultural heritage. Ten UNESCO World Heritage sites are within easy mooring distance- Poreč, Zadar, Šibenik (has 2), Trogir, Split, Stari Grad and Dubrovnik. Ancient city walls and cobbled streets provide endless scenic photo backdrops.

You will find endless options of local and seasonal food such as fresh seafood on the grill, a platter of prosciutto with cheese, oysters, pasta with local truffles or a Peka (slow cooked meat and potatoes cooked under a bell over hot fire). A local spirit called Rakija will kickstart any morning. Croatia wine making dates back thousands of years producing popular local varieties such Pošip and Plavac.

You bucket list could include Stand Up paddles, jet skiing and parasailing in Croatia. On land you can lock up your bike and try 4WD buggies or mountain climbing. Or have a wine on the waterfront and people watch.

Cocktails by the beach during the day followed by local and international performers at night. Spring/Summer programs include many music festivals such as Ultra Europe. Something for everyone!

What to pack for my sailing holiday in Croatia?

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND MONEY

You will need valid travel documents such as a passport or EU ID card.

The Euro is the official currency in Croatia. Visa and Mastercard are the preferred credit cards.

LUGGAGE

Remember storage space onboard may be restricted so think about soft luggage which will be easy to transport and store. Bring a waterproof bag for day trips.

CLOTHING

Consider the climate and season when packing for your trip. In warmer months pack swimwear, sun protection and smart casual light clothing like shorts and resort wear. Pack something suitable for sightseeing and restaurants ashore. Also bring some layered clothes and a windbreaker so that you prepared for a change.

SHOES

Rubber soled shoes such as flip flops or tennis shoes provide comfort and grip. Leave the high heels for your outings off the boat.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Unless you have booked a full board charter, you will need to bring food and drinks onboard. You can expect a yacht and catamaran to be stocked with cooking utensils, pots, pans, glasses, plates, and food refrigeration.

Ideally you will bring food and drinks onboard with you at the start of your journey. A supermarket visit prior to your journey will often be cheaper and provide more variety than smaller (and often more expensive) mini markets on some of the islands. Another option is to pay for a food provision service to stock food and drinks onboard for you but make sure to organise this service in advance.

BED LINEN AND TOWELS

Unless otherwise stated, you can expect yachts and catamarans to have bed linen and towels onboard for you. For an additional cost, additional towels and beach towels can be provided from the charter company prior to your journey.
