FAQ

What is a charter?

A yacht charter refers to the rental or hire of yacht/boat for a specified time at a specified location. There are 2 types of charter: BAREBOAT and SKIPPERED. In Croatia, the hire of yachts and catamarans traditionally starts on a Saturday and finishes on a Saturday.

BAREBOAT CHARTER refers to charter with at least 1 qualified crew member with a valid skipper’s licence and experience and skill. They are responsible for safety, rules, and regulations. You have the freedom and privacy to do as you please.

SKIPPERED CHARTER If you do not have a licenced crew member, you can organise a qualified skipper with your Charter Company at the time of booking. Unless otherwise stated, the cost of a skipper is an additional cost, starting from €150 per day approximately (excluding food, drinks, and tips).

The skipper generally has local knowledge of the area so they can suggest to best beaches and places to anchor. An experienced skipper allows you to switch off and enjoy your sailing journey carefree.

What are the different types of boats to charter?

A CATAMARAN is a yacht with two parallel hulls of equal size (twice the width of a regular sailing yacht). Complete with sails and engines so that you get the best of both experiences. Growing in popularity as it bridges the gap between sailboats and luxury motorboats. Like a luxurious floating home!

POWER CATAMARANS refers to a catamaran that relies on the motors and does not have the traditional sails.

SAILING YACHTS refers to boats with a sail that uses wind to power the vessel for pleasure, cruising, or racing. The waves and wind set the tempo- it’s more about the journey than the destination. Sailing yachts are quieter so you feel more connected to nature and your surroundings.

When there is no wind, the sailing yacht is equipped with an engine. The internal cabin size and amenities varies between yachts. Each yacht listed on TheYachtClub.hr provides detailed descriptions, specifications and photos to help you select a yacht that’s right for you.

MOTORBOAT’S offer speed, comfort, stability, and space. The larger the engine, the quicker you’ll get to your destination.

What are yacht charter costs?

BASE CHARTER is the cost to hire the boat/yacht. The price is based on the boat selected, the onboard equipment, the location, popularity, and season. Just like hotel bookings, the most in demand dates and options are higher in price. The HIGH SEASON in Croatia is summer (July and August). Larger and newer models will be more expensive.

What is docking/mooring fees?

The cost to stay at a marina or harbour are berth/mooring fees. These fees are in addition to the Base Charter fee.

When you stay at a marina or harbour overnight, you can connect to their water, electricity and use land facilities like showers and toilets. It is practical and vibrant with neighbouring sail boats. The cost depends on the size of the boat, season, and location. Expect to pay a higher rate for catamarans as they take up more width. What to pack for my sailing holiday in Croatia?

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS AND MONEY

You will need valid travel documents such as a passport or EU ID card.

The Euro is the official currency in Croatia. Visa and Mastercard are the preferred credit cards.

LUGGAGE

Remember storage space onboard may be restricted so think about soft luggage which will be easy to transport and store. Bring a waterproof bag for day trips.

CLOTHING

Consider the climate and season when packing for your trip. In warmer months pack swimwear, sun protection and smart casual light clothing like shorts and resort wear. Pack something suitable for sightseeing and restaurants ashore. Also bring some layered clothes and a windbreaker so that you prepared for a change.

SHOES

Rubber soled shoes such as flip flops or tennis shoes provide comfort and grip. Leave the high heels for your outings off the boat.

FOOD AND DRINKS

Unless you have booked a full board charter, you will need to bring food and drinks onboard. You can expect a yacht and catamaran to be stocked with cooking utensils, pots, pans, glasses, plates, and food refrigeration.

Ideally you will bring food and drinks onboard with you at the start of your journey. A supermarket visit prior to your journey will often be cheaper and provide more variety than smaller (and often more expensive) mini markets on some of the islands. Another option is to pay for a food provision service to stock food and drinks onboard for you but make sure to organise this service in advance.

BED LINEN AND TOWELS

Unless otherwise stated, you can expect yachts and catamarans to have bed linen and towels onboard for you. For an additional cost, additional towels and beach towels can be provided from the charter company prior to your journey.

What is the cancellation policy?

If you decide to cancel your reservation, the owner/charter company may retain your deposit or charter fee. Different owners/charter companies have their own cancellation policies. Prior to making a booking, review the cancellation policy for the boat selected. Cancellation Insurance is available for an additional fee for unexpected changes to your travel plans. The insurance period starts from the time of payment to the boat pick-up.

What is a security deposit?

Like a car rental agreement, a security deposit is required when you pick up the boat and will be refunded when you return the boat without damage.

Can i stay connectioned onboard?

The phone and wi-fi connections are generally good in Croatia. Certain areas may have low signal strength the further away you are from the coastline. Most newer boats have wi-fi connectivity (there may be an additional charge payable when you pick up the boat). Onshore, many cafes and restaurants offer free wi-fi to their guests.

Can i pick up the boat earlier?

Unless otherwise stated, weekly Charters generally start Saturday 17.00 and check out the following Saturday by 08.00. In High Season there is generally a lot of activity with guests departing and new guest arrivals on the same day. The Charter staff are on a tight schedule with cleaning and servicing in-between guest check outs and check ins. Many Charter Agencies offer early check-in for an additional fee (book in advance due to limited availability).

When should i book my charter?

It is recommended to book your charter at least 6 months in advance to secure your preferred boat and availability.

How many guests can travel onboard?

The number of guests onboard is determined by the boat size and cannot exceed the sleeping capacity. Each guest will be required to show valid ID and pay a Tourist Tax (approximately 1,50 Euro per person, per night).

Can i bring my dog onboard?

Unless stated otherwise, dogs may travel on the boat. Often there is an additional fee payable at pick up. You are expected to take care of your dog throughout the charter to protect the boat and items on the boat.
